With the Cup hero Lukasz Fabianski departing on a free to Swansea Arsenal have been left with Wojciech Szczesny as the only recognised keeper on the club’s books. It may not be a priority at this moment, but another keeper will be brought in a some point. Here i cast my eye over three potential targets.
1. David Marshall (Cardiff City)
In a disappointing season for Cardiff David Marshall was one of the few stand out performers for the Welsh side. He made some truly unbelievable saves which kept his side in games at times and you’d expect after such an impressive season he wouldn’t settle for Championship football.
He made 3.49 saves per game on average and recorded seven clean sheets, a decent tally for a team that got relegated. It’s clear a premiership move would suit Marshall, but he would be coming as a number two, rather than first choice which is clearly what he wants.
Another stumbling block in any potential move is the potential price tag. It is rumoured that £15 million would be enough to tempt Cardiff to sell, however I’m sure Wenger wouldn’t be prepared to pay this just for a number two keeper.
2. Guillermo Ochoa (Free Agent)
Before the World Cup little was known of the Mexican keeper Guillermo Ochoa. However, his performances at the competition have raised his profile massively, and you’d expect many of Europe’s big clubs will be looking into acquiring his services.
The former AC Ajacco man stood out in a relatively average Mexican side and made crucial saves which led his to qualification from the group. On average he made 2.25 saves per game, keeping two clean sheets in the process.
His claim success was also 100%, which should quash any doubts that his lack of physicality would mean he’d struggle in the Premiership. Overall this would be a great signing for Arsenal in my eyes, whether Ochoa would want to come as a second choice is another question, but being on a free you’d be surprised if Wenger wasn’t showing some sort of interest in the shot-stopper.
3.Keylor Navas (Levante)
Costa Rica were expected to be the whipping boys in Group D at the World Cup, but they performed admirably and managed to progress to the Quarter Finals. During this process they had a couple of stand-out performers, particularly Keylor Navas. Again, little was known of this keeper before the World Cup, but during the tournament, just like Ochoa he raised his profile massively.
Levante will definitely be selling the keeper this summer, but if rumours are correct it seems he may be off to Bayern Munich. However though, this would seem a pretty pointless move as he’d be behind the unbelievable Manuel Neuer and would probably struggle to get games on a consistent basis. On average at the World Cup Navas made 4.2 saves per game, and per goal conceded he made an average of ten saves, thus showing his importance to his side. Of the three Navas has impressed me the most, but at the moment it seems the most unlikely move.
